- 3 checks a day
Google AI Overviews change how people see answers above the classic results. This checker looks up a small keyword set through a SERP API, reports whether an Overview appeared, whether your domain was cited, and who else was cited in that snapshot. Treat it as evidence, not a scoreboard.
How to use the AI Overview checker
Enter up to ten keywords and your domain. Pick a country code and device. Run the check. When SERPAPI_KEY is set, each keyword is fetched and classified. When it is not set, you get a plain setup message. The page will not invent citations to look complete.
Read the verdict first. Then scan for ranks_not_cited rows. Those are the practical opportunities: you already appear in the top ten organically, but the Overview did not use you in this snapshot. no_aio means that keyword did not show an Overview this time. That can change tomorrow.
Three runs a day keeps SERP cost predictable. Treat every run as a dated snapshot. Re-check after you publish a stronger answer page, not every hour.
How to read each status
Cited means your domain appeared in the Overview references for that keyword in this pull. Ranks, not cited means you had an organic top-ten URL but were not in the citation list. Not ranking means no top-ten presence and no citation. No AI Overview means the feature did not appear for that query in the response.
| Status | What to do next |
|---|---|
| Cited | Keep the page fresh and watch share of voice |
| Ranks, not cited | Strengthen extractable answers and entities |
| Not ranking | Fix classic relevance before chasing Overview |
| No AI Overview | Park and re-check later; do not force it |
Why snapshots disagree with your laptop
AI Overviews vary by location, device, language, time, and personalisation. A Leeds mobile pull can disagree with a London desktop pull on the same day. The tool labels the country and device you chose so you do not pretend the result is universal.
If SerpApi returns a page token without full text blocks, the tool still treats an Overview as present when references exist. Empty marketing claims have no place here. You will see domains and positions from the payload that came back.
What actually helps citations
Clear answers near the top of the page, original data, tight entity consistency with your brand, and pages that already rank still matter. Schema helps machines understand entities. It is not a magic Overview ticket. Thin affiliate pages that already struggle organically rarely become preferred citations overnight.
Use the AI visibility checker when you care about ChatGPT-style mentions. Use this page when you care about Google’s Overview unit specifically. They are related problems with different evidence sources.
Limits and honesty
This tool needs a paid SERP provider because reliable Overview parsing is not something I can promise from a casual HTML scrape. If the key is missing, the honest failure is the feature. If the key is present and a keyword fails, you will see an error for that pull instead of a fake green tick.
Do not report a single snapshot to a board as a permanent share of voice number. Build a weekly series if the channel matters to revenue. Pair citation chasing with pages that deserve to rank on their own.
Keep keyword lists stable when you trend results. Swapping half the terms every week makes charts pretty and insights useless. Add new terms in a separate series.
If legal pages or thin location pages show up as cited for competitors, study why the extract was useful. Often it is a clear definition, a table, or a local fact, not a wall of adjectives.
Budget the SERP calls like crawl budget. Ten keywords times three runs is already thirty pulls. That is enough for most SMB decisions when the keyword list is intentional.
How I use Overview snapshots in client work
I pick keywords that already matter in Search Console or in the sales pipeline. Random curiosity queries burn SERP credits and teach the wrong lesson. Ten carefully chosen terms beat fifty vanity phrases.
I run the same set monthly for channels where Overview share might affect leads. I store the dated verdict, not a screenshot without context. Country and device go in the filename so nobody compares mobile US to desktop UK by accident.
Ranks-not-cited rows become content tickets. I ask whether the page leads with a clear answer, whether entities match the brand graph, and whether the page has any first-hand detail a model would want to quote. I do not sprinkle schema as a superstition.
Cited rows still need maintenance. Fresh stats, updated screenshots, and clear authorship help you stay eligible. Citations are not tenure. A competitor can replace you after a better page ships.
No-overview rows are not failures. Many commercial queries still show classic results. Chasing an Overview on a query that rarely shows one wastes the team. Park and re-check quarterly.
I pair this checker with the AI visibility tool when leadership asks about ChatGPT separately from Google. Different engines, different evidence. One slide that mixes them confuses the budget conversation.
If the SERP key is missing in an environment, I say so. A fake green dashboard helps nobody. This page is built to fail closed on purpose.
When a client wants daily checks, I push back on cost and variance. Daily noise looks like strategy. Weekly or monthly series with the same keyword list is enough for most SMBs.
Developers sometimes ask whether blocking AI bots hurts Overview citation. Overview behaviour is not the same as training-crawl policy. Keep robots decisions explicit and separate from this snapshot work.
I still invest in classic rankings. Pages that never enter the top ten rarely become preferred citations on competitive terms. Overview work is not a shortcut around relevance.
Report opportunities as a short list of URLs to improve, not as a panic about losing search. Calm operations ship better answer pages than dramatic decks.
When a competitor domain dominates the cited list, I read their extractable blocks, not only their domain authority folklore. Often they simply answered the question in two tight paragraphs with a sourceable fact.
If your brand is cited on a query you do not care about, celebrate briefly and return to the money list. Vanity citations do not pay invoices.
Document the SERP provider and key owner in your runbook. When a check fails in production, you want to know whether the issue is quota, parsing, or a real change in the Overview unit.
I keep a short glossary for stakeholders: citation means your domain appeared as a source in that snapshot, not that you own the answer forever. Organic position means classic blue-link rank in the same pull. Opportunity means you ranked and still were skipped.
When product, PR, and SEO all want different keywords in the ten-slot list, I force a revenue ranking. The checker is too small for politics. Pipeline queries win. Brand vanity queries wait for a second series.
After you improve a ranks-not-cited URL, wait for recrawl and for Overview churn before you declare failure. Re-running ten minutes later mostly measures noise. Re-running next month measures whether the page earned a second look.
