Reddit & YouTube: The Off-Site GEO Engine

Most GEO advice stops at your own website schema, answer-first formatting, freshness. That work matters, but it’s the smaller half. When Ahrefs measured which domains ChatGPT actually pulls from, Reddit came first at 16.7% mention share, ahead of Wikipedia at 8.9% and every publisher on the open web (Ahrefs, July 2026). Your site isn’t on that list. Neither is mine.

That’s the uncomfortable shape of AI search: the engines lean hardest on places you don’t own. Reddit and YouTube are the two biggest of those places, and they behave nothing like a link-building channel. This is the practitioner’s guide to working both what the citation data actually says, which threads and videos get picked up, and the weekly cadence I run on seofreelancerguru.com.

Summarize This Guide With Your Favorite AI

Key Takeaways

  1. Reddit is the #1 domain ChatGPT cites, at 16.7% mention share vs Wikipedia’s 8.9% (Ahrefs, 2026).
  2. YouTube is the other half of the engine. In a 100M+ citation study, YouTube took 31.8% of all social/video citations, second only to Reddit’s 46.4% (Otterly.ai, 2026).
  3. Engagement is not the lever. 80% of cited Reddit posts had fewer than 20 upvotes, and the median cited post was ~900 days old (Semrush, 2025).
  4. Long-form video wins. 94% of YouTube AI citations went to long-form, not Shorts and 35% of cited channels had under 10,000 subscribers (Otterly.ai, 2026).
  5. Being mentioned beats publishing. YouTube brand mentions correlate with AI visibility at 0.737 vs 0.218 for backlinks (Ahrefs, 2025).

Why do Reddit and YouTube dominate AI citations?

Because both platforms supply the one thing model-generated answers are weakest at: first-hand, community-validated experience with a timestamp on it. A model answering “is X worth it” has two options a vendor’s own marketing page, or a thread where fifteen people who bought X argue about it. It picks the argument, because the argument is harder to fake and easier to attribute.

The scale of that preference is stark. Ahrefs’ July 2026 snapshot of ChatGPT’s most-cited domains puts Reddit alone at more than the next three domains combined:

Source: Ahrefs Brand Radar, US queries, July 2026. YouTube ranks #16 in ChatGPT specifically its strength is elsewhere.

There’s a commercial layer under this too. Reddit licensed its corpus to Google for a reported $60 million a year starting February 2024 and struck a separate deal with OpenAI months later (Reuters via AOL, 2024) the platform isn’t just being scraped, it’s being paid to be a source. For the wider framework this sits inside, see my GEO playbook → .

Which engines actually cite Reddit and YouTube?

Neither platform is universally cited Perplexity and Google’s AI surfaces do most of the citing, while ChatGPT leans heavily on Reddit but barely touches YouTube. This is the detail most off-site advice skips, and it decides where you spend your hours.

Otterly.ai’s study of 100M+ citations across six engines found YouTube citations concentrated almost entirely in two places:

Bar chart showing YouTube citation share by AI engine: Perplexity 38.7%, Google AI Overviews 36.6%, Google AI Mode 19.6%, ChatGPT 4.4%, Microsoft Copilot 0.5%, and Gemini 0.2%.

Source: Otterly.ai, 2026. If your buyers use Perplexity or Google, video is high-leverage. If they live in Gemini, it isn’t.

Reddit’s distribution is different again and worth being honest about, because the published numbers disagree depending on what’s being measured. Semrush’s study of 217,000 prompts found Reddit appearing in 13% of ChatGPT Search responses, 9% of Google AI Mode responses, and 4% of Perplexity responses (Semrush, 2025). Profound, measuring share within each platform’s top-10 cited sources rather than share of responses, put Reddit at 46.7% for Perplexity. Both can be true; they’re different denominators. Treat any single “Reddit is X% of AI citations” headline with suspicion and check what was counted.

What makes a Reddit thread get cited?

Format and age, not popularity the median cited Reddit post is a short, old, question-shaped thread with almost no votes. This is the single most useful finding in the whole off-site literature, and it inverts how most people approach Reddit.

Semrush analyzed 248,000 unique Reddit URLs cited across three AI platforms and found the cited posts looked nothing like front-page content:

Infographic: AI-cited Reddit post metrics—80% under 20 upvotes, 70% under 20 comments, 50%+ Q&A threads, median age ~900 days (~80 words).
Source: Semrush, 2025. Viral threads are not the target evergreen question threads are.

Read that as a strategy. You are not trying to win Reddit’s algorithm; you’re trying to be the substantive answer inside a durable question thread that a model will still be reading in three years. A thoughtful comment on a two-year-old “which SEO tool should I use” thread is worth more than a post that hits r/SEO’s front page and dies in 48 hours.

How do I earn Reddit citations without getting banned?

Participate as a practitioner who happens to have a business, answer questions completely inside the comment, and let attribution be a byproduct. Reddit’s moderators are aggressive about self-promotion and drive-by link-dropping, and a banned account earns nothing. The workflow I run:

  1. Pick 3–5 subreddits and actually read them for two weeks before commenting. For me: r/SEO, r/bigseo, r/juststart, r/smallbusiness.
  2. Search for evergreen question threads, not new ones. Sort by relevance, not “hot.” Old threads with thin answers are the opportunity.
  3. Answer completely in the comment. No “I wrote about this, link in bio.” The comment itself must be the citable artifact models cite the text on Reddit, not what it links to.
  4. Keep it ~80–200 words and specific. Numbers, versions, real trade-offs. The cited median is short.
  5. Use one consistent username tied to your real identity, so mentions accumulate against one entity rather than scattering.
  6. Link only when a mod would consider it helpful roughly one link per ten genuinely useful comments, and never to a sales page.
  7. Never vote-manipulate or run sockpuppets. Beyond being against Reddit’s rules, coordinated accounts get detected and nuke the whole effort.

The uncomfortable part: this is slow, and it doesn’t scale with budget. That’s exactly why it works as a moat see Entity Authority → .

What kind of YouTube video actually gets cited?

Long-form, spoken, specific video usually from a small channel, often with timestamps not polished brand marketing. Otterly’s data on cited videos is remarkably encouraging if you have no audience:

  1. 94% of YouTube AI citations went to long-form video; Shorts took just 5.7%.
  2. The 10–20 minute band captured 32.1% of citations, with 5–10 minutes at 26.1% a 5–20 minute sweet spot.
  3. 35% of cited channels had under 10,000 subscribers, and 40.8% of cited videos had fewer than 1,000 views.
  4. 31% of cited videos were cited with a timestamp, and timestamped citations appeared only in Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode.

(Otterly.ai, 2026)

Subscriber count is close to irrelevant. What the engines need is a transcript that answers a specific question in plain language at a locatable moment. So: say the question out loud, answer it in the first fifteen seconds of the relevant section, chapter your video properly, and write a real description rather than keyword soup. A screen-recorded walkthrough of an actual experiment beats a produced brand film every time.

Should I build my own channel, or get mentioned on other people's?

Both but third-party mentions carry more weight, so treat your own channel as the supply and other people’s as the demand. Ahrefs’ 75,000-brand study found YouTube brand mentions were the single strongest correlate with AI visibility at 0.737, against 0.218 for backlinks (Ahrefs, 2025). Crucially, a mention is your brand appearing in anyone’s title, description, or transcript including videos you didn’t make.

One widely-circulated 2026 analysis (Minddex, reported secondhand and not independently verified) puts official brand channels at just 2.4% of YouTube citations, with independent creators, press, and individuals taking the rest. I’d hold that specific number loosely, but it points the same direction as everything above: being talked about beats broadcasting. Podcast guest spots, creator reviews, conference talks that get uploaded, and collaborations put your brand name into transcripts you’ll never own which is the point.

What cadence do I actually run?

Small, weekly, and boring off-site GEO fails from inconsistency far more often than from bad tactics. My working rhythm on seofreelancerguru.com:

  1. Reddit: 3–5 substantive comments per week on evergreen question threads. No posting cadence target at all comments outperform posts for citation purposes.
  2. YouTube: one 8–15 minute screen-recorded companion video per major post, chaptered, with a transcript-friendly spoken answer up front.
  3. Third-party: one podcast, guest appearance, or creator collaboration per month the highest-leverage single activity on this list.
  4. Monthly: re-run tracked queries across ChatGPT, Perplexity, and AI Overviews and log which sources the engines cited instead of me.

Two risks worth naming. First, platform dependency: Semrush observed ChatGPT’s Reddit citations collapse from roughly 60% to about 10% of responses within weeks in late 2025 (Semrush, 2025) a single vendor decision can vaporize a channel. Second, licensing volatility: Reddit’s Google deal has been publicly reported as up for renegotiation (CNBC, 2026). Diversify across both platforms and keep building the on-site half see How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT → .

Frequently Asked Questions

Does posting on Reddit help with AI citations?

Commenting helps more than posting. Reddit is the most-cited domain in ChatGPT at 16.7% mention share (Ahrefs, 2026), but the threads that get cited are unglamorous: 80% of cited posts had under 20 upvotes and the median was roughly 900 days old (Semrush, 2025). Adding a complete, specific answer to an existing evergreen question thread is the highest-value action.

Do I need a big YouTube channel to get cited by AI?

No. In Otterly.ai’s study of 100M+ citations, 35% of cited channels had fewer than 10,000 subscribers and 40.8% of cited videos had under 1,000 views (Otterly.ai, 2026). Format matters far more than audience: 94% of citations went to long-form video, concentrated in the 5–20 minute range.

Which AI engines cite YouTube the most?

Perplexity (38.7%) and Google AI Overviews (36.6%) account for roughly three-quarters of YouTube citations, with Google AI Mode at 19.6%. ChatGPT (4.4%), Copilot (0.5%), and Gemini (0.2%) barely cite video at all (Otterly.ai, 2026). If your audience lives in ChatGPT, prioritize Reddit and text; if they use Perplexity or Google, video is high-leverage.

Is off-site GEO more important than on-site optimization?

They do different jobs. On-site work makes you citable once an engine reaches you; off-site presence is what makes engines consider you at all and the strongest measured correlate with AI visibility is YouTube brand mentions at 0.737 versus 0.218 for backlinks (Ahrefs, 2025). Do the on-site work once, then spend the recurring hours off-site.

Conclusion

The engine that decides whether AI mentions you mostly runs on someone else’s servers. Reddit supplies the lived experience models trust; YouTube supplies the spoken, timestamped explanation they can point at. Neither rewards budget, polish, or velocity they reward being genuinely, specifically useful in public, repeatedly, under one consistent name.

The short version:

  1. Reddit leads ChatGPT citations at 16.7% mention share more than the next three domains combined.
  2. YouTube leads in Perplexity and Google, which together drive 75% of video citations.
  3. Popularity isn’t the lever old, short, question-shaped threads and small-channel long-form video get cited.
  4. Mentions beat broadcasts third-party appearances outperform your own channel.
  5. Diversify a single vendor’s ranking change can gut one platform overnight.

I run this cadence on my own site and publish what it does to my tracked citations. Start with the GEO playbook → , then the Perplexity Citation Experiment →  for what happened when I tested it. Want yours mapped? Let’s talk →.
